It was around 5 pm on a Monday and even though we were promised a dry day, it had not given up on pouring! Mark and I were sitting discussing the recent rugby results, waiting for the sixth fuel drain that day to come in. Before long we had the phone call from a lady on a business expedition who had gone to the Tesco petrol garage in Ainsworth and put petrol in a diesel raspberry red Isuzu i-370 lease car in error. The poor lady was quite agitated apparently, saying "I can't believe I have destroyed the car! I am just so familiar with filling up my petrol vehicle I totally forgot I was driving a diesel!" I asked her to relax and not to fret, also that things like this sadly happen. She had managed to relocate the car into a safe space and, as it was no more than a few miles from the office, we could find the woman almost instantly. The incorrect fuel was extracted so she could get back to the Premier Inn she was residing in. Although we got very drenched, it was all rewarding to watch her drive home calm and much less apprehensive. Yet another job in Greater Manchester well done in my books!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All over Greater Manchester we have noticed more and more instances of AdBlue contamination whereby a motorist has poured AdBlue inside their diesel tank. This is to some extent caused by motorists not knowing the right way to to make use of (important: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and partially simply because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are generally right close to one another on the vehicle.

So, exactly what is the issue with putting AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

Because the product is mainly ionised water, it is actually almost the same as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water don't blend in the slightest and attempting to run a diesel car on water will not work. Moreover, the urea is highly corrosive to fuel system lines and seals and is prone to crystallisation, clogging injectors and fuel filters. If you find you poured AdBlue in the fuel tank drain it as quickly as possible. And most definitely take care not to turn over the motor - not even to shift it from the pump. Assuming you did start the car you will probably have to have the complete fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed.

Whenever you get in this predicament do not panic! Call us, the UK’s Best fuel contamination service. Our experts have got the practical expertise and working experience to have you back on your way rapidly and efficiently, no mess, no fuss.

What a great night's sleep! It was 7:30 in the morning on a sunny Sunday and we were on my way to assist an old woman who put the wrong fuel in her diesel beautiful Vauxhall Insignia in Ainsworth. I'd been informed she had left the petrol station and was stranded along a country road on the way to visit her godchildren. I popped her location straight into the Satnav and got there within an hour. I arrived at the destination and extracted the contaminated fuel out of the vehicle. As I was doing the work she explained, "I'm becoming somewhat absent-minded in my old age and forgot about the vehicle needing diesel seeing that I'd only purchased it a few days ago after my previous one, which I'd had for in excess of twenty years, eventually gave up the ghost". I completed the job and she gifted me a toffee and said thanks a lot. Such a delightful Greater Manchester lady!

Wrong Fuel Assist Ainsworth - Wrong Fuel in Car Ainsworth

I enjoyed a fantastic evening fishing on my afternoon off and felt contented the next working day as I was on the way to aid a young family on vacation in Ainsworth. They'd broken down after putting the wrong fuel into their elegant Suzuki Kizashi, and the car was roughly half an hour away. I got there at their location and smiled to myself while I heard to the lady chastising her husband for being so silly. "Precisely how could you even manage to fill the vehicle up with the wrong fuel?" she demanded of him. I wanted to tell her that this situation comes to pass frequently in Greater Manchester and that it's in reality absolutely nothing to get worried about, but he still got his ear bent. Unfortunate guy. At any rate, I drained out the polluted fuel, flushed the motor and filled it up with the appropriate fuel. While they drove down the road I shouted so long and thought about what her indoors would say to me if I did the very same thing... I'd under no circumstances hear the end of it!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
